About Lady Irwin College
Lady Irwin College was founded in 1932. It is among the premier colleges of higher education in Home Science for women, under the University of Delhi. Initially, the College was under the aegis of All India Women’s Education. It came under the University of Delhi in 1950 and started offering a B. Sc. Home Science degree.
The College offers undergraduate and post graduate courses in Home Science. In addition to these courses, it also supports doctoral programmes in five fields of Home Science. There are more than nine hundred students enrolled with the College in various courses.
The College building was designed by the most reputed architect, Walter George. The college building has been recognized as a heritage site in Delhi by the Delhi Government.
The College offers the following courses: B. Sc. (P) Home Science; B. Sc. (H) Home Science; B. Ed. (Home Science); B. Ed. Special Education (MR); M. Sc. Home Science in specializations in Food and Nutrition, Human Development and Childhood Studies, Fabric and Apparel Science, Development Communication & Extension, Resource Management & Design Application; Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics & Public Health Nutrition; Ph.D. in all five specializations of Home Science.
The College has two other programmes as follows: (i) Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre – Houses a crèche, a play school and an early invention centre in disabilities and daycare. (ii) CAS / UGC – Centre for Advanced Studies. The University Grant Commission granted DRS in the year 1985 and today grants CAS status.
